Xavier Tondo R.I.P.
For today I planned for a longer reflection on the tragic death of Wouter Weylandt. Now I've just read that the world of cycling has to cope with another loss. Xavier Tondo wanted to go on a training ride today. When he prepared to leave with teammate Beñat Inxtausti, he somehow got caught between his car and the garage door and was injured fataly.
Xavier Tondo had been riding for smaller Spanish and Portuguese teams before riding for the Cervelo Test Team in 2010. He experienced his career's second spring here, riding in service of Carlos Sastre as well as achieving better results than ever before. For the current season he changed to Team Movistar and won the Vuelta a Castilla y León and seemed to develop into a grand tour contender.
He gained wide respect when he forwared an e-mail offering him doping products to the police. Hereby he helped busting a doping ring that mainly targeted amateur and junior riders.
It's a terrible month for cycling and words fail in such situations. Goodbye Xavier, you will be missed.
