Ghost Of Wem - s/t LP

To get it out of the way right at the beginning of the post: Ghost Of Wem are dear friends of mine, so I'm heavily biased. But this is a personal blog, so that's nothing to worry about. I was planning on adding some reviews here, so why no starting with promoting good people? Also, I'm not much of a fan of doom, sludge or whatever this genre is called that's been oh so trendy for the last couple of years. I guess that kind of levels that out for a totally objective review.

That said, I like this LP really much. Some say it sounds like Burning Witch while other see it more akin to Eyehategod. I'm certainly no expert and quite frankly: I don't care if they sound like band blabla or band dangdang. I like that record because Ghost Of Wem have a certain aggression and power a lot of doom and sludge bands lack. As they sport a lot of  the trademarks of  contempary doom, as down tuned guitars, slow but driving guitar riffs, heavy basic drumming and some sinister melodies, they also know how to ride a song that's catchy and unique. The songs on this LP grab you right by the throat and shake your head to the band's brutal groove. Singer David's screamed vocals just add to making clear: Ghost Of Wem are not around to make prisoners. Their label describes them as sounding "fucking pissed and filthy". Well put. Of course they are even better when playing live as I was able to witness a couple of time during their recent tour. Too bad for those that missed out. Well not too bad for those ears as they surely go to eleven. Ghost Of Wem kick ass, slowly and painfully.

For those who care: the records is availabe in urine yellow and standard black and is availabe through the band and Blind Date Records.
